Private Investigator Training - How To Get Private Investigation Training

J D Dean

When you decide to become a private investigator your first mission is to find the appropriate private investigator training. But where do you start?

One of the more popular avenues today is to look for a firm willing to offer on-the-job training however, this is becoming extremely competitive as many look for ways to shortcut their learning curve.

For someone fresh out of school this avenue will be difficult to take given their lack of experience in the working environment. For someone coming from a work environment with the right skill sets such as a legal or computer science background then the chances of a firm being interested in their services increases.

The best chance of a freshman getting on-the-job experience is to offer their services free or as a work experience student. If accepted, you then have the opportunity to at least learn the basics of a working private investigation firm.

Online Courses

Today, many school and colleges offer private investigator training through online courses. These courses can vary in length but usually run about three months and provided you pass a set qualifying mark, you'll be issued with a certificate at the completion of the training.

The school doesn't usually create the course material and this is usually provided by a third party experienced in the industry.

Private investigation training courses are usually divided into 15-20 main areas. The most important categories are about surveillance, locating missing persons, interviewing and interrogation, criminal investigation, computer investigation, insurance investigations, lock picking and auto repossession.

The price varies between $150 and $300 however, may not be as interesting as the classic private investigator training in a work or physical class setting.

Job Prospects

About 27 percent of the private investigators are self employed. Many of them have a secondary job, in case they find themselves without clients for an extended period of time.

Getting a job with an agency will take some persistence on your part. The good news is the private investigation industry continues to grow and eventually, you should become successful in your quest for work. Unfortunately, most of the agencies are very small and will not have the chance for advancement. For advancement and increase of salary you should try integrating into a very large company, or starting your own private investigation agency.

Taking private investigator training is a necessity and if the work environment is hard to break in to gain experience then certainly consider the option of an online course.
