Today, you can get involved in the private investigation business from the comfort of your own home. All you need is the appropriate materials such as a computer and with a little training, you are just about good to go. The type of private investigation career options are numerous; as mentioned, working for an agency, working for yourself or specializing in a certain field.

Private investigation training is being offered by several schools. You could expect to learn a multitude of techniques including self-defence, martial arts, computer and surveillance equipment, interview and investigation techniques and more. If there is a local private investigation agency in your area check it out and let them know you are interested in learning more. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

There is no doubt we are all looking for a rewarding career and the private investigation business can certainly offer that. Also remember that private investigation can can also be a somewhat dangerous occupation. If you are more of an individual then you would be suited to being self employed however, if you are more team oriented, then working for an agency is for you. The US Department of Labor reports that about one in four private investigators are self-employed. If this is your preferred option, then doing a stint with an agency is a good idea because there is a learning curve involved. It would also help to get some training in the area of business and marketing as well.

It's always an advantage to have experience either in law enforcement or the military but it is often stressed that this is not a compulsory pre-requisite.

Your private investigation career could see you perform any number of tasks. Clients all have differing needs and requests so expect to be a little versatile. Surveillance is an obvious area of the private investigation business that is commonly required however, roles in protection of clients, conducting background research, exploring fraud and infidelity issues and verification services could "crop up" during your career. Again, private investigation can be a dangerous occupation but not to the extent you see portrayed on the silver screen in most cases but it can certainly be very rewarding.
